Dreaming of Macarons

October 7, 2008

If anybody knows where can I get macarons in SF, please send me an email or comment. They don’t have to be by Pierre Herme, per se. And, I don’t think Pierre Herme macarons are available outside of Paris, anyway. Sigh… they look so pretty and so delectable. Oh, this is another reason to visit Paris one day. Here are macarons from F. Lamet:

More pics here and here.

UPDATE:

The Black Apple made some macarons recently and was cool enough to share in her post where she found the recipe — from Epicurious.

They are so pretty! I desperately want to try them, but I’ve never seen them around Portland, either.

Miette used to sell macaroons, though only a few flavors. You might try there (I haven’t lived in SF since late 2006, or I’d go check there myself).

I haven’t had a macaroon in a long time. I think I’ll head out to find some.
My area is light in classic French bakeries, but awash in boulangeries, if you will. Macaroons? Not so much. Organic whole wheat? Thousands!
The one (and BEST in the entire world) Italian bakery in town closed after the owner died, and I’m still in mourning.

…and apparently PORTLAND is macaron central? Who knew? I didn’t!
Do you think they last through the mail…?

I hope I’m not stating the obvious (I have a tendency to do so), but I ran a quick search on Yelp. Macarons are available at (by varying reviews):
La Boulange, 2043 Fillmore
Boulange de Cole Valley, 1000 Cole St between Grattan & Parnassus
Patisserie Philippe, in SOMA at 655 Townsend between 7th & 8th
and as someone else mentioned, Miette in the Embarcadero.
I’ve never had a macaron, myself. They look like meringue cookies, which I like but don’t LOOOOVE. Reviews (and even better…PHOTOS!!!) can be found on yelp.com. And after having looked at the photos, I need to go find myself some cookies or ice cream or something, because I’m salivating.

I’m writing this on 11/14. I don’t know why it took me so long to realize this, but it only occurred to me this afternoon to google macarons + SF. Thanks, Alice — I’ll check out Yelp, too.

Well, Google came up with good results and time permitting (sooner than later hopefully), Doug and I are going to visit (1) Pamplemousse in Redwood City and/or (2) Miette at the Ferry Building (as recommended by Alice and drwende). I don’t know how they’ll taste, but if they’re sweet enough and flavorful, and pretty (as all the pictures on Flickr have been), I’m sure I’ll love them. I’m VERY excited. I hope they’re better than meringue!

Thanks for help, ladies!

Alice, I hope you found some cookies to fend off your munchies.
