Film Photos: Diana Mini First Photos

Diana Mini

Over the holidays, I bought a Diana Mini 35mm camera. My, that’s a sweet little honey. Today I just got my first roll of film developed!

Waiting for film to be processed is exciting. I find myself feeling anxious and hopeful that each shot will turn out just as I saw it in my mind’s eye. But, as I feared, only a few photos turned out okay. I’m disappointed, but at the same time motivated to keep practicing. Each one of those bad pictures was expensive so I’m going to set aside my Diana and my other film cameras and will restrict my learning to my Nikon D40 where mistakes don’t hurt so much.

My photography class begins in only two weeks. Yay!

Ooo I bought one of these with my Christmas money and it should be arriving very soon! Do you have any tips after your first roll of film? I love your pictures of the baubles in the trees and the rigolo cafe.

Are these from your Diana mini? They are lovely, I really love the colours. Don’t feel too bad about mistakes though, my first diana mini film didnt turn out at all – I think its a tricky little camera to get the hang of, I haven’t tried again since (I really should do…)

Good luck with your photography course, how exciting!

p.s. I read your comment, drop me an email if you have any film questions and I’ll try and help, its been mainly trial and error for me :)

hey all of these look great, i really love the one with your little pug looking up at the camera :) and the baubles in the tree look cool too. i wouldn’t worry too much about not getting too many shots you’re happy with, that’s pretty much how it goes with these kinds of cameras! i find the same with my holga, but it just gets better with time as you learn more about your camera and how certain film works in it. don’t put it down just yet. i know it’s expensive though :( i had to stop shooting holga rolls because i’m trying to save and can’t really justify the money at the moment. i still love the holga though, i’m looking forward to picking it up again someday.

i think these came out really cool – you definitely have an eye! i don’t know what a diana camera is….but now i’m completely curious because first of all i love the look of the camera and secondly the pictures you took came out beautiful. i’m completely partial to the one of your dog (because i love dogs!) and he’s a cutie :) but there’s something really cool about the reading nook picture. the colors and the mood just work in that pic – great job!! can’t wait to see what you do in your photography class!

I think these look great, I especially like the first one. I didn’t realise they used square film, is it made specially for that camera? I know what you mean about the cost, i used to have a four lense lomo one (don’t know what the official name is), but I ended up giving it away because getting stuff developed was expensive and I never used it.

I think these photos came out really neat, and I’m excited that you’re getting to take a photography class! I’ve always secretly wanted a Diana camera, mostly because it has my name. I know it’s silly and a bit narcissistic, but they do make beautiful images.

i think your images are beautiful. it’s the imperfections that make a photo awesome (in my opinion).

can’t wait to see what you learn in class!

First roll turned out great! The last two are my favourites. I’m excited for your classes to begin, it might be a little technical… I actually hated photography class back in school and look how much I embrace it now haha, but the first step’s already conquered, you have the interest :D

oh man i’m nervous about developing my first roll too. Like mentioned i also heard you mess up your first roll most of the time. but you did get a few really sweet shots! its all fun anyway. but your right if only it wasnt so expensive to mess up!! :)

13 Rebecca 01/06/2010 at 9:50 am

They turned out really well! Film photos have such a “real” quality in comparison to digital. You’ve inspired me to pop a film into my old camera and take some snaps. I love the tone of colours in these photos.

Go you! The Diana is such a cutie. Shame it is so expensive, but then, if you feed it, it will love you back–the images are gorgeous. Will you be using it in your class?

your pug is ridiculously adorable, especially in that plaid outfit!
LOVE film classes, don’t like the expenses & wait, i prefer instant gratification, but it definitely does alter the way you look at things in some perspectives.
Anyways, cant wait to see your film photographs! yeyy!

You took those? With that camera? Omg, omg, they are BEAUTIFUL! Geez, don’t you just love FILM? I am just emamored by it right now. The images are always more mysterious, less candid, more bewitching. Love it.

33 Nicole 09/27/2010 at 8:38 am

Nice photos, i also have a Diana Mini but i’ve been having issues when it comes to processing, the colors all seem to be well … average. The phots that came out most clear, dont have any grain and the colors look just like i used any other camera. I went to a specialty store to get them developed. I’m wondering if the developer had a color correcting mode on it? have you had any similar issues?

34 Lili 02/02/2011 at 8:14 am

Those look gorgeous. I really love the colour tone. What film did you use to achieve that? My Diana mini is on its way, I can’t wait!
