The Search for a Chubby Baby

02/19/2010 in snapshots

In my search for chubby babies and other Chinese propaganda art, I found myself in Chinatown thinking that this would be the obvious place to find what I was looking for.

Chinatown @ Chinese New Year

How wrong could I be! I found zilch! Mostly, I found tourist trinkets and I ♥ SF t-shirts, and goofy license plates like “If this van is a-rockin’ don’t come-a-kockin!” — very Chinese!

And of course, there was a constant barrage of firecrackers thrown by pre-pubescent teenage boys, thrilled to be in the Big City…

And I became impatient when my ears began to hurt and ring louder than normal.

Though I didn’t come across any chubby babies, I found other treasures on my way out, like these gorgeous tea cups.

And this black rabbit was much too precious to pass up! Although I didn’t find my chubby babies, it was a successful trip all in all.

I’ll be back Monday morning with Flickr Fave. Have a fun weekend, you guys!

I agree with everyone else, lovely pictures.

Have you ever gone to Japan town in SF? Everything there is more authentic and not so touristy. It’s one of my favorite places to visit.

SF Chinatown was where I purchased my beloved “My child beat up your honor student” bumper sticker (much to my mother’s chagrin)! You are right… the stuff they sell in their gift shops is so random. When I was in grade school, I bought an “antique” Chinese lock and key and some coins (which were probably not antique at all). I went there more recently to find a qipao for my wedding and a lot of the dresses looked like they were made for the Miss Chinatown pageant (tons of holographic sequins, etc). I ended up getting mine made in Taiwan.

I do love the tea cups and rabbit you bought, though! I also remember that one store specializes in handmade lace and embroidered linens (for very low prices, too). It’s like a 1950s teenager’s trousseau exploded. Next time I go to Chinatown, I’m going to try to find that store again because I’m sure it’ll be great for DIY supplies.

So sad your trip didn’t find you any chubby babies…but I’m glad you went so I can live vicariously through your great pictures! I’ve always wanted to go to chinatown in SF. it looks great! And I know what you mean about trying to come across some cool items…only to discover cheesy souvenir items!

You took me right back to my days drifting around SF. I agree, that part of town is a letdown overall… if you’re looking for authentic culture, that is. The architecture is lovely, though, and it’s unlike any other place in the state. All things considered you found some cute cute keepsakes.
