Photoshop: Starburst and Scallop Medallions

09/21/2010 in photoshop,tutorials

The Highest Accolades Dress from Anthropologie’s September 2010 catalog is one of the most charming dresses I’ve seen in a long time and it’s the inspiration for today’s short and sweet Pixel Pointers Tip — award ribbons!

Pixel Pointers: Award Ribbons

Award ribbons are easy to create in Photoshop! You can also use the Scallop and Starburst Medallions if you like.

Pixel Pointers: Award Ribbons

If you want to make award ribbons similar to the ones I made, you can easily create your own solid medallions in Adobe Photoshop by following these 10 simple steps:

Lovely!
I think it would also be fun to use a couple of scallops on
each other from small to big. This way you can also use
the patterned scallops in the back so the font will still be
clear when you put an 1 colour scallop above it… Oh.. does
this make any sense with my pour English :p?

I love this idea! I only just discovered your beautiful website, love love love it. I’m going to play with the medallions some more, but for now I’ve made myself a new blog header with some of them (with a shout out to you :)

I’m using Pixelmator rather than photoshop (because I am cheap), but I find for the most part the same steps can be taken. It takes some effort to add drop shadows, but they make things look so much better than just one layer on the page.

Thanks for your fantastic blog!

13 Henway 09/22/2010 at 2:51 pm

I’ve always been hesitant on giving awards to other websites b/c part of the prestige of getting an award has to do with displaying a fancy cool award icon/ribbon. So thanks for these ideas

Amazing, thank you for this! Question – how do you add a shadow to the scalloped image?

Also, what do you mean by a strike in the text?

18 Anna 09/23/2010 at 11:53 am

how did you apply the stroke to the learning curve font? the letters are not connected so it looked different…
