Blogger Tip: How to Backup Your Blogger Blog

01/29/2011 in tutorials,web tips

Backups are important. When things go awry (usually when you least expect them to), a backup can restore your blog posts and can save all the hard work and time you’ve invested. So, you need to learn how to do backups as soon as possible and then make backups on a regular basis. Thanks to Blogger, it’s really easy! Here’s how you can make backups of your Blogger blog in 6 easy steps:

#1

Login to Blogger. After you log in, you will land at the Dashboard.

#2

If you manage several blogs, back them up one at a time. For now, choose one blog to backup, then click on Settings (orange link in the image below). In this example, I’m going to make a backup of my style blog, 10 Pretty Things.

#3

While in the Basic Settings, click on Export Blog.

#4

Click on the huge orange button that says DOWNLOAD BLOG.

#5

Depending on your security settings, what follows may vary. In my installation of Chrome, for example, the browser gives me a warning that what I’m about to download my be dangerous. I will click to SAVE anyway because I know it’s safe — it’s my backup.

#6

I have a default download directory called Downloads. If you have a default download directory like I do, look for that file and save it to its own directory, preferably one with all your Blogger backups.

Note that the backup process does not make a backup of your images — just your posts.

In the next tutorial, I’m going to show you how to Restore a Backup.
