Brushes: Speech & Thought Bubbles

These Photoshop brushes were inspired by Rivane Neuenschwander’s contemporary art collection at NY MOMA, which was blogged about on Poppytalk by contributing writer Lisa Solomon.

Thought bubbles are widely used as captions in Japanese fashion magazines (ie. Papier, Mini, and Zipper). Seeing them used in a magazine layout in this way, I thought speech bubbles would also make cute web captions. But it wasn’t until I saw the speech bubbles in Rivane Neuenschwander’s art collection that I finally set aside the time to learn Photoshop’s infamous Pen Tool and use it to make some bubbles. This video helped me a lot — but I gotta admit that I have a lot more practicing to do. :)

In any case, my hard work paid off and today, I offer you 19 Premium Photoshop Speech & Thought Bubbles. Instead of offering them as clip art, I made them into Photoshop brushes. After all, brushes are really flexible — you have the option of choosing a speech bubble in any color you like, you can choose any size you want, and you can combine different impressions to create a speech bubble shape that is uniquely your own (more in demo).

By the way, Taco and Chico are both wearing Les Moustaches (free clip art), courtesy of the lovely Minitoko.

Oh Katrina, thank you so much! I’ve struggled and struggled with message bubbles! I can make them in AI, but then I can’t get them sized right for what I want in PS…this is going to be awesome! :)

This is a really neat idea! I’ve seen something similar before but they weren’t brushes, they were mainly stickers, so they weren’t as customizable as you said (changing the size, color, etc.). The pen tool is a bit difficult to master at first but once you do, the results are worthwhile.
