I got an email asking how to get the effect that SNL uses for their bumper photos — you know, those bright retro-ish photos of the hosts shown between acts and commercials. I thought it would be a cinch and I said I would do a tutorial on it. Besides, I think this style would lend itself to eye-catching profile photos. Well, it turns out that I’m pretty clueless because it took me the entire weekend to figure it out and even then, there’s something missing with my version. I can’t really put my finger on it, but I think it’s the skin tone??? Anyway, even though there’s room for improvement, I like it. Hey, if you guys have any pointers about fixing the skin tone, please share the wealth.
In case you’re wondering, the Saturday Night Live font is Gotham Ultra. I wanted to buy it, but it’s a budget buster. I used Arial Black for the title instead.
I want to thank The Clothes Horse for giving me permission to feature her photo in this tutorial — thank you, Rebecca! ♥ And, special thanks to Stephanie for giving this tutorial a go. Check it out here!
Notice that I colored the flowers in Rebecca’s crown with yellow and I also colored her skirt a shade of bright pink.
If you need to review layers masks, check out the tutorial I made here.
That’s it, guys! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. :)
