Style: CSS Pretty Registration and FAQs

September 10, 2012

I’m happy to finally announce that registration is open for CSS Pretty! You can read more about the course here and check out the course content here.

FAQs

The course will be taught via HD screencasts ($25/30-day access). I’m using Blogger as a teaching tool in this class. Before you sign up next week, please create a Blogger account. You can read about the course highlights here and read about the details (long version) in the FAQs below.

By the way, if you’re not CSS curious and you’re only interested in the CSS Pretty Blogger Child Theme — hey, that’s cool, too — the free theme will be available for download soon.

Why CSS?

I get a lot of questions about how to add margins, remove spaces between things, add spaces between things, add borders, remove borders, make things disappear, and move elements around the page. Along with these questions, people tell me that the whole topic of HTML and CSS is overwhelming and gives them a headache. The answers to many of the questions I get can be found in some easy CSS and I’m creating my CSS class to show you that there isn’t anything to be afraid of.

What will I learn anyway?

This class is project-based. You will learn the simple CSS I added to Blogger to create this blog step-by-step. It’s the same set of CSS and tools I use to get my blogs to look just the way I like them. I don’t claim to be a CSS guru, but I do know that a little CSS can take you a long way. In other words, I will teach you what I know by building a blog with you (virtually) from start to finish. CSS is empowering and fun. ♥

How Much Does It Cost?

OPTION #1: The course will be taught via HD screencasts and will cost $25/30-day access. CSS Pretty was supposed to be a conventional instructor-led online workshop only. However, as I was creating the screencasts, I realized that many students could work through the lessons on their own. I took the idea one step further: I could extract the course content out of the workshop and simply make it available as a self-taught screencasts for students who don’t need an instructor. The self-taught course could be priced a lot lower, and the only thing that would be missing would be my feedback and support. So, I decided to offer the option of a self-taught, 30-day access course that you could register for anytime, similar to my Membership Extras.

OPTION #2 CLOSED: For those of you who prefer to have an instructor, I am offering my first instructor-led workshop in October. It will run for four weeks and I will be your guide. We will have a weekly schedule and I will answer questions you might have pertaining to the course. Just like the self-taught course, everyone will make their own project blog and I will provide feedback. One thing, though — I’m only taking up to 15 students. Registration for both options will open next week.

I’m on WordPress, Can I Take Your Class?

CSS Pretty is a blog course with a strong focus on CSS. CSS is the universal style language of the WWW and all blog platforms. So, WordPress lovers are welcome! WordPress is a great platform. In fact, it’s my blog platform of choice. However, Blogger is the perfect teaching and learning tool for what we need to do. If you’re unfamiliar with Blogger, don’t worry. I will walk you through a thorough Blogger setup in Days 1 and 2. So, in addition to valuable CSS techniques, you will learn some new things about the Blogger platform in my course.

Why do you insist on using Blogger for the project blog?

Blogger is free and there is only ONE version of it. Besides, you can edit the CSS for free. On the other hand, you can’t edit the CSS on WordPress.com blogs — you have to pay a freakin’ fee. If we were to use WordPress, we would have to use self-hosted WordPress blogs and each of the students would have to have an identical WordPress blog so that we would all be on the same page. Taking/teaching in a virtual classroom where everyone is working on a different system with different variables would be difficult — kinda like herding cats. Can you even imagine that? That would be insane! So, to make everyone’s lives easier, I chose Blogger. Remember guys, the focus of this class is CSS — not Blogger, nor WordPress.

If I have questions, will you answer them?

Q&A Discussion and Feedback is a feature of the instructor-led course, which is Option #2 — I can only answer questions in that venue. Registration will open on Monday, 9/10. Otherwise, I have tutoring packages available — please email me for rates.

What About Refunds?

Sorry, guys. Due to the nature of online courses that use digital resources, there are no refunds. And, please be aware that CSS Pretty is project-based and that you will recreate this blog on Blogger.

Why Should I Take This Class?

If you want to learn CSS, there are millions of free resources for you. All you have to do is google “free css courses” and find 6,150,000 places to start learning. But my course is a little different — you will know how to build this blog from start to finish. And, you will have the CSS tools to get your blog looking just the way you want it.

Thanks for all your supportive emails over the last month. I hope you learn a lot and enjoy the course! Check out a sample lesson from CSS Pretty:

Course Feedback

I want to make sure that the course content is as clear as possible. For those of you who finish CSS Pretty, I’d love to hear about your experience! Please send your course feedback and suggestions to stylescreencasts (at) gmail (dot) com.
