I used to dislike tablets because they made my handwriting look like I had written it left-handed — and I’m right-handed! I even upgraded because I thought there was something wrong with my first tablet. To my surprise, the new tablet didn’t improve my handwriting. But, after lots of practice, I observed that my handwriting looked best when I used large brushes. And the inverse was true: it looked worse at smaller brush sizes. Since I didn’t want to write with a huge marker all the time, I had to find a way to write with a fine tip…
The solution
Magnify! Handwriting with small brush sizes looks best when created at high magnification (300-500% or more), and handwriting with a large brush looks just right with very little or no magnification. For example, if I want to use a 1px brush, I have to zoom in 700% or so. In the examples below you can compare the effect that different magnifications give you. In the first example above, I used a 1px brush with zero magnification and look at how disgusting it is. :) Compare that to the handwriting created using 700% magnification.
