Blog Platform for Beginners

I get this question a lot: “I want to start a blog. Which is better: Blogger or WordPress?” I usually refrain from answering this question because there isn’t a single all-purpose best blog platform that will handle everyone’s needs. The answer really all depends on what features you need and what you plan to do with your blog. If you’re just starting out, I say, start simple and outgrow what you know.

If you’re a beginner and you want to give blogging a try, consider these 3 points when choosing your blog platform: Is it free? Is it easily customizable? Is it reliable?

Links Loved

May 11, 2012

Before anything else, I want to thank SFGirlbyBay for featuring my mini envelope DIY in her weekly series, Tuesday’s Girl. I was out and about most of Tuesday and Victoria’s post was a bright spot in my day. Thanks, Victoria! ♥ Here are some fresh links loved: Confessions of a freelancer, new nail designs and DIYs to try, a printable freebie from Bianca, my future planner, cute sunnies, and other fun stuff. :)

STYLE
Noteworthy: La Sardina
(La Sardina in houndstooth)

A couple of weeks ago, I stopped by Lomography to buy a replacement for my busted and beloved Diana Mini. The store was so much fun — there were so many things to look at and play with. After touching every camera in the store, I finally decided to get La Sardina wide-angle Lomo camera in houndstooth. Isn’t it pretty!? Anyway, I’m looking forward to finishing up my first 36-exposure roll so I can see my pictures. So exciting!

Alphabet Beads as Photo Captions

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me playing with these alpha beads. I found these cuties at The Hobby Company on Geary Blvd. in San Francisco. I’ve seen these beads many times, but I’ve always passed them by. But, after seeing them used as props in Bullett Magazine’s fashion spreads, i.e. A League of Their Own, I decided to snag a few bags for my own projects. Bullett used many types of humble alpha beads that you wouldn’t expect to find in the pages of a super slick magazine. They made those beads look so cool I wanted to try them myself. Now, my photos are neither cool nor slick, but these chocolates and bonbons were fun to photograph. Besides, they were my reward after the shoot, which was the best part of all!

What the Font?

What the Font?
(Lattes from Trouble Coffee)

The first time I saw Pee Pants Script it was on the cover of Nylon Japan’s April 2012 issue. It looked so artistically disheveled I assumed that it was hand-drawn text by Nylon’s in-house graphic artists. On the hope that it was a real font that I could download, I went to my MyFonts’ What the Font service where you can upload a graphic or submit a URL to images that contain fonts you want to identify. Much of the time, What the Font works great if you can provide a good image. But, the font robot couldn’t identify Pee Pants Script, so I gave up looking until I saw the mystery font again on Free People (via Day Dream Lily).

Fill an Outline Font
(hover over toast to see non-fill version)

Hey folks, in the previous tutorial I showed you how to outline a solid font. In this post, we’ll do the opposite — add a fill to an outline font. In my demo, I’m going to use the Pee Pants Script. The steps are pretty simple and if you want to learn how I do this sort of thing, please read on. If you know a better way, please share the wealth and let me know.

By the way, that piece of cinnamon toast entered my life last Friday. I saw Mon’s mouth-watering Instagram photo on Thursday and felt destined to make another pilgrimage out to Trouble Coffee the next morning. Totally worth it!
