I bought my nail art dotting tool more than a year ago. I had a short-lived fantasy that I would get elaborate with my nails this year. But, as much as the idea of getting wild with my nail paint appeals to me, the bottom line is, I’m lazy and I like quick and easy manicures. The fanciest I get is when I push and clip my unruly cuticles and pray I don’t cut too deep. Sometimes I use glitter nail polish and maybe paint one nail a different color than the others. Really wild. Well, I’ve used my dotting tool two times in the last month. I’ve been doing simple stuff like the polka-dotty impressions I made two weeks ago. Today, I graduated to a leopardy-skin-like pattern, or maybe it’s a tiger eye pattern — or is it a school of penguins?

Blog Bling Kit

Links Loved

December 1, 2012

It’s been a grim and wet week. Every day we come back from our walks soaking wet. Chico and I are fine with the rain unless there’s thunder and lightning involved, but Taco really hates it. Today I saw this rose standing out in the gloom and as the dogs were doing their bizness, I quickly snapped this shot with my iPhone and later processed it with VSCO and added some grain — quite nice. Anyway, here are my links loved: street fashion with Bill Cunningham, a chocolate coin purse, a somewhat unlucky house, cute iphone cases, D*S podcasts, a guide to web typography, surprise balls, new blogs I enjoyed, and other fun stuff!

SX-70 Manual
Hello World!

As I mentioned the other day, I’m going to recreate the Monki-inspired Photoshop tutorial for Style members using HTML and CSS. While I was working on it, I created the prototypes that you can see in the picture above — we’re gonna make the same layout that I used in this Photoshop post (the one with the gray grid background). Okay, you might be wondering: we made it in Photoshop, so why are we doing this???

My Monki fixation has intertwined with my abiding love for boxes and borders. One of the most eye-catching features of Monki Magazine is their use of borders to frame photos, especially their use of rotated frames to grab our attention — we can’t help but look at them and linger for a moment! Well, I couldn’t let this pass without a proper exercise for all of us who are unfamiliar with a Photoshop rotate. By the way, in Part 2, I’m going to recreate today’s tutorial for my Style peeps using HTML and CSS — stay tuned!

Magnificent: Monki

Magnificent: Monki

I first heard about Monki from Adeline — she was featured in their online magazine at this time last year. When I was at Barnes and Noble last week, I saw Monki Magazine and I immediately thought of Adeline and how much she loves their clothes. So I checked it out and loved everything I saw: the layouts, the typography, the beautiful photography, the articles, the thick paper… and of course, the clothes. The amazing thing about the magazine is that it’s really a catalog of their products, a 120-page ad. However, it’s a keepsake. I’ve been flipping through it for the last several days. Hey, you can check out the Monki Mag archives over here.
