Inspired by Jeremy Stockwell’s picture-in-a-picture Polaroid shots, I took these photos in front of the Volkswagen dealership on Mission Street in Daly City. As much as I’m a fan of the VW GTI, I’m not in the market for one. But, VW had the best balloons, with happy carnival colors and I just couldn’t resist using them as props for this set of photos.

As I was doing my thing, a salesman approached me and asked what I was doing. I said, “I’m just taking pictures for fun.” As I handed him my blogger card, I said, “You can see these pictures on my blog tomorrow.” Then he said, “What’s a blog?” Hey you guys, we’re on the bleeding edge. :)

The instant photos were taken with my beloved bastard camera, my Holgaroid, and the enclosing photos were taken with my D40 Nikon, with a fixed 35mm lens. I’m pleased with how they turned out.

I hope you guys are enjoying your weekend. I will see you on Monday for Flickr Fave. :)

I made a trip to Mission Dolores to visit Tartine Bakery. I calculated the best time to go would be 2PM, hoping that the usual crowd would have dissipated by then. But I was wrong — it was packed. The line ran out the door and it took 15 minutes to order a single Banana Cream Pie and a double espresso to go. This is why I rarely visit Tartine. A simple visit can easily turn into an expedition, with parking as far as eight blocks away from the bakery.
I wanted to take lots of pictures of this cafe because during those very rare occasions that you manage to snag a table, it really is a pleasant place to pass the time and people watch. It’s also a great place to take many candid pictures. I was able to take a couple with my D40 and I promise to them to you next week.

The highlight of this trip is that I brought my Holgaroid (Holga with a Polaroid back)! Despite overcast weather and my low speed film, I was able to take 4 photos that captured today’s mood.

Thanks for visiting my blog and for all you kind comments. I appreciate them all. :)
Alright you guys, have a wonderful weekend!

Over the holidays, I bought a Diana Mini 35mm camera. My, that’s a sweet little honey. Today I just got my first roll of film developed!
Waiting for film to be processed is exciting. I find myself feeling anxious and hopeful that each shot will turn out just as I saw it in my mind’s eye. But, as I feared, only a few photos turned out okay. I’m disappointed, but at the same time motivated to keep practicing. Each one of those bad pictures was expensive so I’m going to set aside my Diana and my other film cameras and will restrict my learning to my Nikon D40 where mistakes don’t hurt so much.
My photography class begins in only two weeks. Yay!

I bought a 35mm camera from Walgreens today. It was a really good deal, too. It came loaded with a roll of color film with 24 exposures (400 speed). And, if I get it developed at Walgreens, I won’t have to pay for film ever again since the camera comes with a lifetime worth of refills!
It’s been ages since I’ve handled a 35mm camera. The last time I used one was during my trip to Europe seventeen years ago. I took pictures casually then, for fun, and didn’t care at all about good composition. Sad to say, but after seeing the pictures I took today, I don’t think I’ve improved much. My new camera from Walgreens has revealed a lot of my shortcomings and surely, I have plenty of room for improvement. Of the 24 shots, only 4 turned out okay. But, that’s alright I guess since I’m still learning. I really want to become a great photographer one day. So I registered for an intro to photography course at City College next semester and I’m feeling optimistic and excited.
